On April 28, 2008, E channel’s, Chelsea Handler showed The Jonas Brothers’ performance on Fox Television’s “American Idol”. This teen band gained global popularity for sporting purity rings and promoting abstinence. Their bubble-gum brand of pop/rock attracted millions of teens to embrace them. Some fans compared the Jonas craze to the legendary Beatlemania during the 1960s and 1970s. But, one late-night host is less than thrilled.
Chelsea Handler has made it her pledge to expose Hollywood’s addiction to “fluff and nonsense”. She put the Jonas Brothers on her hit list of annoying celebrities with Paris Hilton (and anyone rumored to be dating her), Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Tori and Dean Spelling, Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Rossen, The “Living Lohan” clan, Tom Cruise and a host of others.
Handler has credentials to back her. She rose from stand-up to appearing as a regular on “Girls Behaving Badly”. Later on, E created the funny, but short-lived “Chelsea Handler Show”. In between that, she authored a best-selling book of memoirs called “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands”. It told ALL, like Heidi Fleiss’s little, black book. E brought the successful writer/comedian back to do “Chelsea Lately”.
The show’s overwhelming popularity earned it a second season with 150 new episodes and a promising third in 2010. Handler maintained these commitment and also starred in an all-internet comedy/drama show called “In the Motherhood”. She paired with actress, Jenny McCarthy and HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star, Cheryl Hines. She has become an A-list celebrity and now, a two-time, best-selling author with “Hello, Vodka. It’s Me, Chelsea”, on her hard work and merit. The Jonas Brothers have their success on Disney Channel’s powerful marketing machine.
Handler did an exclusive interview spoof of a Jonas Brothers interview. She had comedian, Heather McDonald play Miley “Hanna Montana” Cyrus. She also added comedian, Jen Kirkman to play one of the Jonas Brothers. Handler made comments about their (peculiar) hairstyles. She also questioned them about their sexuality. During the “interview”, she created a catfight between her “Selena Gomez” and “Miley Cyrus”. To say, her portrayal angered fans, was an understatement.
However, 14 and 15 year-old girls sent obscene, death threats to the E Channel studios. Handler posted a few that had grammatical errors. That only added to the lunacy. YouTube postings have Jonas fans spewing hate and threats as well. You wonder are the children’s parents involved in some way.
Handler made a joke; plain and simple. The Jonas Brothers earned an extra million of her talking about them. Their fans are kids with too much time on their hands. Children are too young and immature to have sex anyway. Their parents should have taught them that without lame, bubble-gum pop music.
And, to the ones who submitted those threats to E. Congratulations! You are now no better than the terrorists who said “Death to America” or the street thugs who said “Dirty Snitches Deserve Ditches”.
Your parents would be proud.
