The Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t historians. They didn’t care that 99% of hockey fans believed the Detroit Red Wings had their number. None of that mattered.
They bucked history and their naysayers. Earlier tonight, the Penguins completed a Cinderella-like ride to Lord Stanley’s Cup as they defeated Detroit 2-1. The improbable victory took place in downtown Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, the mecca of the National Hockey League (NHL).
It was a drama-filled contest pitting the repeat participants of last year Stanley Cup finals. Last season, the Red Wings raised the Cup. This season, Pittsburgh dethroned the regal kings of Hockeytown, U.S.A.
During the game, all-world, Sidney Crosby was injured in the second period. He tried to come back in the third and final period, but returned to the bench. Maxime Talbot scored two goals for the Penguins. Evegin Malkin had an assist and won NHL’s Conn Smythe trophy as Finals MVP (Most Valuable Player). Goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury had 23 saves.
