A Tragedy Is Averted at Roland Garros

Tennis historians remember 1993. A once vibrant and dominant, Monica Seles was sitting in a chair during a net change. Suddenly, a deranged German fan plunged a knife into her upper back and shoulder. She screamed in agony and the assailant was tackled by security. Seles was never the same after that attack.

Yesterday, Roger Federer tied Pete Sampras for most Grand Slam victories by winning the French Open at Roland Garros (Paris, France). He beat a game, Robin Soderling from Sweden in a stirling, three-match sweep.

Unfortunately, the match was rudely interrupted by another deranged “super” fan. A man wearing an dark orange uniform burst from the gallery. He charged Federer and waved a similar colored “Champions” flag. Federer flinched and stepped back. The man tried to put a hat on the 13-time major champion. The terrifying incident took perhaps 30 seconds to a minute. However, no one came to Federer’s aid. It was apparent that the athlete was emotionally shaken.

Eventually, security chased and then took down the lunatic. Federer regained his composure and became the greatest tennis player alive.

Helluva tackle. Would like to have seen Roger smash the racquet over his head.

I can't believe people can still get out on to the court. Especially after what happened to Monica Seles 16 years ago.

Man, what terrible, terrible security. That guy was on the court for like 12 seconds before anyone even attempted to go after him. Then when the dude runs away they don't even chase him.

incredibly slow reaction by security. he should have been on the ground with broken ribs within 10 seconds.

wow. worst security ever! if that guy hadn't tripped over the net, he probably could've kept avoiding them

Not hard to get on the court, there are essentially no barriers. Just takes a willingness to get arrested, and possibly roughed up a little.

It was a little surprising and scary how long the fan was free to roam the court, and how long he had full, unfettered access to Federer. Thankfully he was just a knucklehead, but if he had more nefarious intentions...

i don't think that rattled federer much. just took a minute for the crowd to settle down. i like soderling's reaction, too... very classy.

this guy was pretty lame. fully clothed? what was he trying to do, drape a flag over federer's head?

There should a universal rule when fans attend a sporting event. A sign should be posted that if you attempt to enter the field of play, you enter at your risk and are responsible for any physical damage to your person by security.

Also, put in the fine print, ”Security is allowed to use lethal force at their discretion.”

I wonder if someone would cross that line feeling froggy.

Sports are a product of our past symbolizing the fight and struggle for the best breeding ground and anyone that watches or partakes in ports is still a child of mind and has never grown up
The symbolism of sports is a good reason why 95% of humans are and live in their dizzy world
wow–we gained 10 yards–dizzy
